Lawrence Axelrod, Principal
Lawrence Axelrod founded, oversees and actively participates in all aspects of services at Axelrod Energy Projects LLC (AEP), a New York-based company, which opened for business on August 20, 2007, in order to provide research and consulting, cargo brokerage, and project development services to the energy industry.
For three decades, Mr. Axelrod has observed and analyzed the international oil market; his entire professional career has been focused on serving the energy industry. Considered an expert in heavy oil products, Mr. Axelrod has researched and consulted extensively on heavy fuel oil, heavy feedstock and bunker fuel. He speaks at and moderates conferences and panels throughout the world (see Events).
Prior to forming Axelrod Energy Projects, Mr. Axelrod headed the heavy fuel oil practice of Poten and Partners, During his 18 years there, his tasks included research and consulting regarding fuel oil, feedstock, and bunker fuel. He originated, wrote, and edited an international fuel oil publication. He provided cargo brokerage services for petroleum products and assisted clients in project development. During his tenure at Poten, he assisted and worked with traders, blenders, refiners, majors, state oil companies, power companies, and industrials.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Axelrod was a staff petroleum economist at W. J. Levy Consultants Corp. During Mr. Levy's lifetime, W. J. Levy Consultants was considered one of the world's leading consulting firms on international energy economics. At Levy Consultants, Mr. Axelrod analyzed and projected price and supply demand balances in world energy markets, focusing primarily on oil and natural gas. Clients of the firm included oil refiners, oil producers, power companies, large industrial consumers and government entities.
Prior to joining Levy Consultants, Mr. Axelrod was a staff reporter for Petroleum Intelligence Weekly (PIW), now published by the Energy Intelligence group. At PIW, he reported and analyzed developments related to world crude oil exploration, production, and marketing. At PIW, he established a cadre of industry contacts with whom he could discuss oil market developments around the world.
Mr. Axelrod began his study of the world oil industry as a graduate student at Columbia University, and was awarded a Certificate from Columbia's Middle East Institute in the School of International Affairs. His doctoral dissertation for the department of political science (in the School of Arts and Sciences) assessed the economic and political determinants of Saudi oil policy.
Mr. Axelrod is a longstanding member of the University Seminar on the Middle East, an, invitation-only monthly Seminar sponsored by Columbia University that brings together world experts on the Middle East from academia, government, and industry. For several years, Mr. Axelrod served as the Seminar's rapporteur.
